Tanvir Jafri, son of slain Congress leader Ehsan Jafri,on Friday sent a letter to state police chief S S Khandwawala, requesting him to file a criminal complaint against VHP leader Pravin Togadia. Tanvir has sought to lodge the complaint under sections 503 and 506(1) of the Indian Penal Code, pertaining to threat and intimidation.
The letter was sent in connection with a media briefing by Togadia in Gandhinagar on May 10,in which he had threatened to take action against Tanvirs mother Zakia Jafri and Teesta Setalvad of Mumbai-based Citizens for Justice and Peace NGO.
Zakia, assisted by Setalvad, had filed a petition in the Supreme Court levelling allegations of mass murder and criminal conspiracy against 63 people, including Chief Minister Narendra Modi and Togadia,in the 2002 riots in which the former MP was also killed.
Based on this petition, the court had ordered the Special Investigation Team (SIT) to find out if there was substance in the allegations. Following the order, the SIT summoned and questioned several people, including Modi and Togadia.
After his questioning on May 10,Togadia told the media that he would take action against Zakia and Setlvad on an appropriate time.
