: Asif Ali Zardari is now well and truly the president of Pakistan. Since his election, he has vowed to curb presidential powers, and reiterated time and again that he would promote friendly relations with India.

The situation is complex, however, as the Pakistani army continues to hold the trump card, the Taliban rampage on, and the politicians remain far from united. This does not augur well for Zardari’s presidency. One hopes, nevertheless, that Zardari will be able to rein in fundamentalists and the ISI, and make a genuine attempt at solving the Kashmir issue. And, above all, he has to manage Pakistan’s quarrelling politicians.

‘V’ for vendetta

The expulsion of the former Punjab CM, Captain Amarinder Singh, by the Punjab legislative assembly, on charges of corruption and misuse of official position, sets a dangerous precedent that may be emulated in other states.

Every state witnesses political vendetta at work. Any party or coalition in power can take recourse to this mechanism to get rid of political foes. Parliamentary privileges should be codified so that their misuse can be checked.

Nano skid

The Singur knot is getting tangled. The Tatas, it would now appear, depended on the writ of the Left running freely across the state, and erred in taking the reluctant farmers for granted.

Had they kept in touch with issues that invariably arise in such large-scale transformation of land use, the problems may not have grown out of proportion. The blame for the Nano imbroglio has to be apportioned to the Left, the Trinamul and the Tatas, and they must join hands in finding a solution. If not, they will have all grievously failed Bengal.

The invincible

A phenomenal champion has once again proved that he is the best in the world. By winning the US Open, Roger Federer has answered his critics who were busy predicting his downfall. Our cricketers should follow suit and learn from determined sportsmen like Federer instead of focusing on minting money from commercials.

Federer’s victory reminds us of Pete Sampras too. Clearly, he is the first tennis great since Sampras to match him in calibre and heroism. Federer has proved once again that he is, still, the invincible ace of this generation.
