On June 25, then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi declared an internal emergency in India in 1975, citing threat to national security.The period is still remembered for a widespread crackdown on civil liberties, politically motivated detentions and arrests, widespread use of media for government propaganda, the passing of several laws illegally and a mass sterilisation programme.
