Didi's Silence
Quick to criticise and oppose every decision of the union government, especially after her party pulled out from the UPA, Mamata Banerjee has been surprisingly silent on the appointment of new CBI director Ranjit Sinha, though the BJP has been making a lot of noise about it. Sinha was the director general of RPF when Banerjee became the Railway Minister after the 2009 elections. They hardly got along with each other, especially after Sinha objected to the use of RPF personnel by Banerjee for her personal security. Banerjee used RPF to guard her during her party''s campaign in the West Bengal state elections, and she retained some staff even after she ceased to be the Railway Minister and moved to Kolkata as chief minister. RPF neither has the legal mandate nor the expertise to provide personal security, something that was conveyed to Banerjee by the Home Ministry as well. The temperamental Banerjee, however, took it out on Sinha, and before she moved to the state from the Centre, she ensured that Sinha was replaced by a relatively junior officer, P K Mehta, who superseded as many as 28 officers to become the DG of RPF. That had left Sinha without a job for several months.
