ISO certificate to Sector 17 police station: Administrator stresses on transparency

“Microfilm the records and create a databank, with an online facility for access to information,” UT Administrator General S F Rodrigues (retd) told the police organisations, while addressing the gathering at the ceremony held to award the ISO certificate to the Sector 17 Police Station. The oldest police station in the city, was not only adjudged the best in the country, but was also presented the international certification ISO-9001:2000 for meeting good service standards.

Asking the city police organisation to be more transparent, Gen Rodrigues said that by putting information online, it would bring more transparency to the system besides making it more user-friendly. He added that women desks and police stations should be improved for giving psychological solace to the victims. He further stressed the need for strengthening the feedback network system and filing of FIRs by the aggrieved persons. He also asked UT Inspector General of Police S K Jain to identify the false complainants and take action against the miscreants.

General Rodrigues added that the cooperation of people, in providing facts and relevant information, alone could help the police in the process of investigation. He said it was the community which was to give a proper feedback about the positive and negative aspects of the system to further improve the service delivery systems.

UT IGP S K Jain, in his welcome address, said the Chandigarh Police had achieved the gradation by providing efficient service to the citizens through a number of initiatives, including introduction of feedback mechanisms, providing a toll free helpline (1090) for senior citizens, setting up sub-divisional grievances redressal units and installation of CCTV cameras in police station. Jain added that modernisation of the police force would remain one of the top priorities of the UT Police as it would ensure efficient transparency and accountability of the police personnel.

Dr Parmod Kumar, Director ICD, while speaking on the occasion, said the international level competition was organised by Altus Global Alliance in partnership with Institute for Development and Communication, Chandigarh, and the unique event was represented by 22 countries across the world with the participation of 3,500 citizens from 300 cities. He said the exercise revealed that there was a need to reform the processes at the police stations’ level.
