Kolkata, February 20
The Opposition councillors at the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) have demanded the withdrawal of the BPL list from all ward offices.

Sovandeb Chattopadhyay, Trinamool Congress leader and chairman of Borough 14 said, “We want KMC to form a new list. The list sent to the borough and ward offices is full of mistakes. We want the civic body to conduct a fresh survey.”

The list states 1,27,000 people fall under the BPL category.

On his part, Municipal Commissioner Alapan Bandopadhyay said the process of updating the list is underway. “The final list will be submitted to the state Urban Development Authority in the last week of April. Aamendments to the list will take place till April 1,” he said.

The BPL list sent to ward 39 includes the names of residents who are better off financially. This apart, the list also wrongly mentions the names of certain streets. “There is no street named Lower Road in my area. The list registers Salesh Agarwal and Krisan Agarwal as BPL residents. But none of them satisfies the BPL criteria,” said local councillor Manila Chowdhury.
