Nandaram traders seek Governor’s help to reopen shops

A five-member team representing 600 traders of the Nandaram market visited Governor Gopalkrishna Gandhi this evening to seek his help in reopening the market.

“The Governor has promised to help us by negotiating on our behalf with the state government and Mayor Bikash Ranjan Bhattacharya,” said Samar Chaudhury, secretary of the Nandaram Market Traders Association.

Nandaram and Kashiram, the twin markets located in the Burrabazar area, were damaged in a devastating fire in January.

About 500 shops in the top six floors of the Nandaram market were gutted. The entire Kashiram block was also damaged.

After their plea to reopen the damaged shops was turned down by the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) and the fire and emergency department, the traders decided to approach the Governor last week.

After meeting the Governor, the traders blocked Brabourne Road in front of the Nandaram market for two hours in the evening.

“We will continue to block the Brabourne Road for two hours, from six to eight, every evening till Friday to protest against the refusal of the KMC and the fire and emergency services department to reopen the market,” said Choudhury.
