No entrance test now for a seat in Presidency College
Express News Service Posted online: Wednesday, April 30, 2008 at 0113 hrs IST Kolkata, April 29 The departments, which will follow this new trend are Bengali, Philosophy, Geology, Mathematics, Sociology, and Statistics. More departments are expected to join the league in future. Meanwhile, as the proposal of doing away with the examination is making rounds, the administration is not willing to comment on the issue. “We had a meeting in this regard on Monday. The matter is still under discussion,” said Anish Chattopadhyay, the secretary of the teachers’ council of the college. “Each department has the autonomy to take their own decision on the matter and in giving admission on the basis of marks of Higher Secondary examination the merit of the students will not be sacrificed,” said a teacher. Some teachers also claim that the admission test is a lengthy process and the college loses many good students in the process. However, the insiders of the college say that such a decision will affect the academic standards of the institution. They claimed that some political motives are there behind the idea. Soumik Ghosh, the Assistant General Secretary of Presidency Students Union said: “Without informing the union council if the college takes such a decision the students will oppose it”. |
