Kolkata, May 2
Even as the Detective Department (DD) of Kolkata police arrested a person who acted as a dummy candidate during the police recruitment exams held in Hooghly district, police suspect that two senior IPS officers were aware of the racket.

The senior officers in question had earlier been posted in Hooghly district as superintendent of police.

“Instead of taking action, the IPS officers had allowed the corrupt practice to continue. However, at this point, it wouldn’t be possible to disclose the names of the officers, one of whom is a DIG and the other is with the intelligence branch,” a source said.

Jawed Shamim, DC (DD) said that Suraj Bahadur (23), a resident of Serampore in Hooghly district, who was arrested on Thursday, had represented several candidates in the physical section of the recruitment exam.

The police have already arrested several persons, including four constables in connection to the scam.

The alleged masterminds Gopal Das and Prasad Basu alias Bappa are, however, still absconding.

The police have arrested Partha Saha, a photo studio owner for making fake admit cards.

The police also raided a lodge in Konnagar in Hooghly — the base of Das and Bappa’s operations — following a lead that several women dummy candidates were staying there.

But after reaching there the police did not find any dummy women candidate.

“We were tipped off that some dummy women candidates were staying in the lodge located at Bansai auto-stand near Konnagar. We are keeping a watch on the lodge,” sources said.

Sources added that police detectives have visited the state police training school over the past few days to interrogate some constables who were recruited recently.

“We found that height and weight of some constables didn’t match that mentioned in the official records. They are now being questioned,” the officer said.
