10 Reasons why Yashwant Sinha should not resign

1. Maintain Tradition: He is no Lal Bahadur Shastri. In fact, nowadays no one should offer to resign: see what happened to George Fernandes: he is only busy travelling to Mumbai to tame the Thackerays of the world or defending himself before ornate commissions of enquiry. We certainly have no Shastris left and the two we have are busy being spokespersons for the two political parties most responsible for our ills.

2.Ignorance: This is not uncommon to Indian politicians and why should we make an exception of Yashwant Sinha. As he himself said, he just didn’t know : what makes matters worse (and which is why I am worried for all those suckers out there) is he still doesn’t know what’s wrong with the Indian Economy: all he did was present a dream budget which today is a living nightmare. It would be hugely unfair to blame the Finance Secretary for not informing the Minister of Subrhamanyan’s letter that fateful Saturday afternoon because the Finance Secretary is a bureaucrat and not a postman and we must give him that respect.

3. Helping Friends. Take a look at all the media companies that have been funded by UTI. Here one must give credit to the India Todays and Business Todays who exposed the rot in UTI long before anyone else did: now one thing is certain, that Yashwant Sinha certainly spoke to Subrhamanyan the crook but more to check on weather conditions in Mumbai or whether George Fernandes’ plane had landed. It had nothing to do with helping people out; helping the backward districts of UP and Bihar or such trivia. Yashwant was just being a good friend and what’s a few hundred crores amongst friends especially when its your money and my money. Surely we can’t ask Yashwant Sinha to resign on such flimsy grounds. He only did (on a massive scale) what Brajesh does routinely!

4.The PMO: In today’s India the PMO can be blamed for almost everything so shove this at their door too: they’re either too tired to respond to scams or plain busy working to put together yet another one which is why this trick of Subrhamanyan won’t work: nor will it influence Yashwant to resign : if the PM can reconsider his resignation, then why should Sinha consider it all!

5. The Congress: From the defense in Parliament which one again poor Jaitley had to conduct (see what all they make him do), it’s evident that it was Manmohan Singh Kohli and not Sinha responsible for the mess at UTI and here I’m being serious. Sinha inherited a fund negative of about Rs 1100 crores so expecting him to work hard and rectify this is asking too much, especially for a politician.

6.His past: Sinha is the only bureaucrat turned Finance Minister so he knows all the tricks and all the stalling processes of both sides of the coin. The bureaucrat in him at times takes the better of his morality so there is no reason why his genetic make-up should force him to resign or better still be accountable at all which is why he’ll live happily ever after even though our economy’s headed South: towards Jaya country!

7. Parliament: See how they treated him. Apparently abuses were heaped on him and he was not allowed to speak: it’s a different matter that he had precious little to say but fact is Sinha has done all he could. Or could not. So Parliament has given him a new lease of life.

8. The well-known Bombay business house: Now this is one reason why he can’t resign: the fact that he took names in his reply to the adjournment motion means he will survive since there is definitely a lobby at work which will ensure that he doesn’t say too much AFTER he resigns. This Government can only handle one Ram Jethmalani in a single term.

9. People will forget: Even talk of US 64: so why should he resign over a simple issue such as this: I mean people haven’t resigned over bigger issues such as Ayodhya or the Mumbai riots and this is kindergarten stuff compared to that so it is a bit much: we should not be so demanding of our Finance Minister.

10. What will he do: Till George Fernandes is out of the Cabinet, he will remain Troubleshooter Number 1 (sounds so much like Govinda though) so what work will the poor Sinha have: he has already done the routine stuff which is presided over a couple of scams; got some senior ministers to defend him; travelled to Agra and such like…so we must sympathise with him.

Stay on Mr Sinha. This country needs you. Especially now when we have a reluctant Prime Minister; a film-hungry Home Minister and an Opposition which still has to find Indian roots as it were. You are our only hope. In fact, for Subrahmanyan, also the last straw of hope.
