Medvedev mauls Mantilla for title

DPA

HAMBURG, May 11: Andrei Medvedev of Ukraine won the opening 10 games enroute to his third title at the $2.3-million German Open today, 6-0, 6-4, 6-2, over 10th-seeded Spaniard Felix Mantilla.

The unseeded Medvedev clinched victory after 91 minutes of play infront of a 7,000 crowd against Mantilla, who seemed to face total disaster before briefly improving halfway through the second set.

Medvedev, 22, picked up a $377,000 winner's cheque for his third title here after 1994 and 1995. It was his fourth title at a Super-9 tourney (besides Hamburg Monte Carlo in 1994),.

The success was his ninth on clay and 11th overall.

As a result Medvedev will move back into the top-20 in tomorrow's ATP rankings from a current number 38 placing. Enroute to the final he upset second-seeded Russian Yevgeny Kafelnikov and fifth-seeded Wimbledon champion Richard Krajicek.

World No 15 Mantilla had to settle for $177,000 in his first 1997 final. The Spaniard mainly fell victim to his weak second serve, which Medvedev mercilessly attacking from well inside the baseline.

The lopsided first set lasted just 17 minutes, with Medvedev basting winners all over the place, and the Ukrainian seemed on course to a rout when he also raced off to a 4-0 lead in the second, saving four break points in the fourth game.

Mantilla got a standing ovation when he finally won his first game for 4-1. He fought from 5-1 to 5-4 and even had a break point for 5-5, but Medvedev hung in to go two sets up. The Spaniard's fate was sealed when he dropped serve again in the third game of the third set, and -- after another break for 5-2 -- Medvedev served out the match with a forehand winner.
