Pierce pounds away to crown

[Details] France's Mary Pierce won the Italian Open tennis tournament, when she beat defending champion Conchita Martinez of Spain 6-4, 6-0 -- halting the Spaniard's hopes of a fifth successive Italian title. The 22-year-old Pierce, who had knocked out top seed Monica Seles earlier in the week, made few mistakes and used her powerful groundstrokes to good effect.

Manjrekar, Gavaskar dazzle

[Details] Mark Waugh's scintillating 116 off 66 balls yesterday powered Australia to a four-wicket win over Rest of the World XI. Sanjay Manjrekar topscored for the World XI with 80 runs from 86 balls followed by Rohan Gavaskar's unbeaten 51 off 30 balls which took the team to 245 for eight in the allotted 40 overs.

[Details] The chess match between World Champion Garry Kasparov and IBM's Deep Blue supercomputer will come down to the final game after man and machine played to a draw yesterday for the third straight time. Kasparov offered the computer a draw after the 49th move of the game, which lasted just over four hours.
