Goa to have centre for child development
EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
PANAJI, May 12: Behavioural disorders and learning disabilities among children are by no means uncommon in Goa. Though the State has relatively better health and economic indicators than the rest of the country, the problems of behavioural aspects of children in schools has not received much attention. The shortcoming is now sought to be removed as the first Centre for child development and family guidance called ``Sangath'' is being opened. The idea conceived entirely through private initiative is now to be carried out and the centre is to be managed by a group of experts. ``Sangath'' aims at assisting the Goan families in tackling behavioural disorders and learning disabilities among children. The threats to children's development and well-being have multiplied in frequency and severity and have become an important health issue as the rapid pace of change in the society is placing an ever-increasing burden on children and young people, explains Dr Vikram Patel, a psychiatrist and one of the key figures behind the setting up of ``Sangath''. According to Dr Patel, the long-term impact of development and behavioural problems of childhood could be quite serious. For example, children with hyperactivity have been recognised to suffer from school failure, anti-social behaviour, drug abuse and in adult life were likely to indulge in criminal behaviour. Dr Patel, along with a team of other professionals, intend to deal with various problems related with development of children. Copyright © 1997 Indian Express Newspapers (Bombay) Ltd.
