Hazare firm on clearing his name
Madhav Gokhale
RALEGAN SIDDHI, May 13: Anna Hazare said today that he would not accept anything less than a complete probe into allegations against him. On the fourth day of his fast-unto-death, a resolute Hazare reiterated his demand for a probe by an investigating agency `to bare the truth about the Hind Swaraj Trust and the development activities at his native Ralegan Siddhi village.' Hazare replied in negative when asked whether he would withdraw his stir with the State Government announcing to institute a probe into the allegations made against him by Bal Thackeray. Thackeray in an interview to Dopahar Ka Saamna -a Hindi eveninger of Sena published from Mumbai early this month, was critical of Hazare for `misusing a whopping Rs 22 crore'. Hazare has also asked activists of the Bhrashtachar Virodhi Janaandolan all over the State, to resort to peaceful agitations pressing for his demands at various district headquarters. The future course of the agitation would be decided sometime next week after a meeting with the senior members of the Janaandolan. The crusader with expressive face `spoke' to The Indian Express through gestures and signs at his Yadavbaba Temple-residence, this afternoon. The social worker evaded to `comment' on his desire to end his life. To a question he shrugged with a grin and referred certain paragraphs in his open letter to the people of Ralegan Siddhi elaborating on his philosophy. Men were never indispensable, the coming generations would carry on his mission, he `said'. Usually he has been keeping himself engaged with Dnyaneshwari recital since he has resorted to fast-unto-death on Saturday. Yet, compiling bunches of the copies of the correspondence he had with chief minister Manohar Joshi and other ministers on eradicating corruption since early 1995 kept him and a group of his men at Ralegan Siddhi project occupied for a better part of the today. Hazare would be sending all the copies to all the ministers, it was stated. The fasting crusader has lost about four kgs since Saturday, though his health was stated to be stable. The Pune unit of the Bhrashtachar Virodhi Janaandolan has planned a day- long protest fast on Thursday. Copyright © 1997 Indian Express Newspapers (Bombay) Ltd.
