Field day for Tamil Nadu

Rayan Rozario

COIMBATORE, May 27: The Tamil Nadu boys and girls had a field day in the ongoing National Children's Chess Championship organised by the Coimbatore District Chess Association at the PSG Tech auditorium here on Tuesday.CV Rajalakshmi of Tamil Nadu emerged the sole leader in the under-14 girls section with five and half points from six rounds, while RR Laxman and Mahesh Chandran, both from Tamil Nadu, shared the lead in the boys group with six points from seven rounds.

In the under-12 section for boys, MR Venkatesh of Tamil Nadu, who suffered defeat on Monday, bounced back comfortably to share the lead with Arghyadip Das of GNCA and Deepan Chakravarthy of Tamil Nadu, while in the girls category, Shraddha Samani of Maharshtra, N Vinuthna of Andhra Pradesh and Tania Sachdeva of Delhi were joint leaders with six points from seven rounds.

The top board games in the under-14 section were keenly contested ones. Sixth seed CV Rajalakshmi stunned top seed JE Kavitha of Tamil Nadu in 74 moves, while RR Laxman crashed the hopes of overnight leader Prathamesh S Mokal of GNCA in 62 moves.

Rajalakshmi adopted the Caro-Kann Classical Variation to Kavitha's e4. In the initial stages of the game, Kavitha made a miscalculated bishop f4 move which helped Rajalakshmi gain an edge over her opponent in the centre. The players exchanged pieces in the middle and towards the end Kavitha lost a crucial pawn which ultimately turned the game in favour of Rajalakshmi.

Top seed RR Laxman played the Richter Rauzer Attack in the Sicilian Defence and straightaway was on the rampage. Prathamesh instead of countering the attack was aimlessly moving the pieces which helped Laxman score over his opponent. In the 18th move, Laxman sacrificed a d5 pawn thereby helping himself to a favourable position. Prathamesh was not one to give up that easily. He fought his way back to equalise, but in the closing stages of the game, Laxman had three connected pawns on the King side while Prathamesh had two shattered pawns on the Queen side. Laxman used his pawn advantage to the full and queened his `h' pawn on move 62.
