Five protestors gunned down in police station
PRESS TRUST OF INDIA
BHOPAL, May 29: In a shocking incident, police shot down five persons and injured seven others today when they opened fire on a crowd protesting against the murder of a labour leader. Workers of the Maihar cement factory stormed into a police station at Maihar, in Satna district, to demand the arrest of the killers of their leader, Ramesh Tiwari. Police initially resorted to a mild lathi charge and then burst teargas shells to quell the mob. When these measures had no effect, they opened fire. Curfew was imposed in Maihar later in the day. A police spokesman said around 2000 workers had attacked the police station to demand the arrest of those who had murdered Tiwari. Copyright © 1997 Indian Express Newspapers (Bombay) Ltd.
