India to oppose changes in UN environment agenda
EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
New Delhi, June 18: India is of the view that there should be no re-negotiations of `Agenda 21' at the coming special session of the United Nations General Assembly to review the implementation of the agenda on environmental protection, Saifuddin Soz, Minister of State for Environment and Forests said on Wednesday. Addressing a Press conference Soz said that there was a global consensus on some sectors such as fresh water, chemicals, forests, environment and trade, energy and transport. As regards the question of an international convention on chemicals there was need to look at the availability of substitutes for fertilizers and pesticides as well as carry out risk assessment studies, Soz said. In this context the developed countries had to accept their responsibility for making available the technology on concessional terms, he added. Despite many constraints, especially of resources, India has initiated several activities and programmes in the context of `Agenda 21'. The concerns of the agenda are being integrated into the development planning process at all levels, he added. Copyright © 1997 Indian Express Newspapers (Bombay) Ltd.
