Cosmonauts say Mir stable, repairs tricky

REUTER

KOROLYOV (RUSSIA), June 27: The commander of Russia's Mir space station said today the situation had finally stabilised after an accident on Wednesday that severely reduced its electric power supply and holed one of its modules.

``For the first time, I feel that the situation on the station has stabilised,'' a spokesperson at mission control near Moscow quoted Vasily Tsibliyev, 43, as telling the centre after checking the air pressure, temperature and humidity.

She also told mediapersons that Tsibliyev, his flight engineer Alexander Lazutkin, 39, and 40-year-old British-born American physicist Michael Foale felt fine after a night's sleep. Mir keeps Moscow time as it hurtles round earth. ``The crew feel all right,'' she said.

The crew on the space station was working today with as little as 30-50 percent of required electricity and may soon make a space walk to check the damage caused by Wednesday's collision, reports said.

A spokesman for ground control said that ``there will undoubtedly be space walks, but a decision on that will not be taken until the technical leadership has decided how to proceed.'' Meanwhile, the crew were doing everything to conserve energy, including suspending all their scientific experiments.
