Statescape -- Noted journalist, freedom fighter D N Singh dead


NEW DELHI: Noted journalist, freedom fighter and former Editor of The Free Press Journal D N Singh, died here today after prolonged illness. He was 82. Singh is survived by wife, three sons and two daughters, family sources said. He had also worked as Editor of Dainik Bhaskar (English), Associate Editor of The Motherland and Assistant Editor of The Indian Express. Singh, who participated in the freedom struggle right from his school days, was a close associate of Feroz Gandhi with whom he had worked in The National Herald in Lucknow, sources said.

AP to ask Centre for additional rice

HYDERABAD: Andhra Pradesh Government would approach the Centre for additional procurement of rice from the state by Food Corporation of India (FCI) in view of a bumper crop, Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu said today. ``I will personally contact Prime Minister I K Gujral for this purpose.

I am also writing letters to the food and agriculture ministries,'' Naidu, who is also convenor of the United Front, told a press conference here. The procurement, which had been brisk throughout the state was likely to exceed the target of 42 lakh tonnes, Naidu said and added that a request would be made to the Centre to procure an additional 10 lakh tonnes.

Special Assembly sittings suggested

MUMBAI: Prime Minister I K Gujral has suggested convening of special sittings of Legislative Assemblies and Councils of all states on August 15 or 16 in their respective capitals on the occasion of the golden jubilee of India's independence.

This was disclosed here today by Maharashtra Chief Minister Manohar Joshi, who met Gujral for about an hour in Delhi on Thursday. The Parliament is having a special sitting on August 14 midnight to mark the 50th anniversary of Independence.

Joshi said the state government was organising a grand celebration here on August 9 coinciding with 55th anniversary of `Quit India' movement launched by Mahatma Gandhi from the Gowalia Tank ground, renamed as August Kranti Maidan, here.
