Top Indian golfers for British Open
PRESS TRUST OF INDIA
HONG KONG, June 27: Three top Indian golfers will cross swords with their other Asian counterparts at the final qualifying for the British Open in Scotland next month. Jeev Milkha Singh and Gaurav Ghei, both members of the squad which shocked Scotland in last year's Alfred Dunhill Cup finals, and Arjun Atwal, will attempt to book a place in the world's most prestigious event on July 13 and 14. They will compete along with over 100 golfers for 10 qualifying spots on each of the four links courses on the Ayrshire Coast -- Glasgow Gailes, Barassie, Irvine Bogside and Western Gailes. The 126th British Open will be staged at Royal Troon from July 17-20. Korea's Kim Jong-Duk, a member of Asian PGA, has qualified following his victory in the US $790,000 Kirin Cup in late April. A deal struck by the Asian PGA allowing entry into the final qualifiers for the top-80 in last year's Omega Order of Merit has prompted unprecedented interest in the event from Asian pros. ``More than 30 of out members will be making the trip to Scotland to attempt to make it through to golf's oldest and most prestigious tournament,'' the Asian PGA executive director Ramlan Harun said. ``Never before have so many Asians made a bid for honours overseas making this a landmark venture for Asian PGA and Omega Tour.''
