Waugh slams ton as Aussies recover

Australia 224-7 REUTER

MANCHESTER, July 3: Steve Waugh held England at bay with a defiant, unbeaten 102 for Australia on the opening day of the third Test at Old Trafford today. An impressive debut by paceman Dean Headley, who took three wickets, and five catches by wicketkeeper Alec Stewart reduced Australia to 160 for seven after they won the toss.

However, Waugh's grit and application brought his 13th Test century just before the close when Australia were 224 for seven.

Headley removed Australian captain Mark Taylor (2), opener Matthew Elliott (40) and Michael Bevan (7).

Waugh frustrated England's attempts to wrap up the innings, sharing an unfinished eighth wicket stand of 64 with paceman Paul Reiffel.

Dean Headley sets a family record

History was created during the third Ashes Test at Manchester when England's Dean Headley became the third member of the same family, spread over three generations, to appear in a Test match.

Dean's grandfather was the great Jamaican batsman George Headley (known as the Black Bradman) who appeared for the West Indies from 1929-30 to 1953-54 in 22 Test matches and scored 2190 runs (avg. 60.83) with 10 hundreds.

George's son and Dean's father, Ron, appeared for the West Indies in two Tests in 1973 scoring 62 runs at an average of 15.50. Ron later played for Worcestershire in the English county cricket. Dean plays for Kent.

Interestingly, this is only the second occasion when members of the same family have appeared for different teams in Tests. Three brothers appeared together in a Test match at Cape Town in 1891-92, when Alec Hearne and George Gibbon Hearne played for England, while the third brother Frank Hearne represented South Africa in the same match Mohandas Menon.
