Kunjurani bags 3 medals

BEIJING, July 9: India's Kunjurani Devi, an assistant commandant with the Central Reserve Police Force, bagged three medals -- two silver and a bronze -- in the 46 kgs class as superpower China demonstrated their awesome prowess making a sweep of nine golds out of the 12 up for grabs in the Asian Weightlifting Championships at Yangzhou in Southeast China on Tuesday. The day's honour was cornered by Xing Fen of China, the 1990 Asian Games champion, who claimed three gold in 46 kg class, creating a clean and jerk world record with a 105.5 kg haul, bettering the previous mark set by compatriot Guan Hong. She also bagged the snatch (75 kg) and overall (180 kg) gold. Kunjurani, the diminutive Indian, also won a silver with a 95 kg clean and jerk effort besides ending up with a bronze in the snatch after both she and silver-medallist Tsai Hui-Waon of Chinese Taipei lifted 67.5 kg each.Hosts China reigned supreme by shattering world records and baggging nine gold medals. Chinese Wan Jianhui set the snatch world record hoisting 163 kgs to grab all the three golds in the men's 70kg class. The 24-year-old bettered the previous mark of 162.5 set by compatriot Zhan Xugang at the Atlanta Olympics and lifted 180 kg in clean-and-jerk to total 342.5kg.
