MUMBAI, August 15: At the BMC general body meeting at midnight on August 14, Municipal Commissioner Girish Gokhale formally announced certain policy decisions for the benefit of Mumbaikars.

Water connections will be given to all authorised hutment dwellers residing in slums built prior to January 1, 1995, said Gokhale. Abiding by the state government guidelines, a group of five huts in each slum colony will be given a single connection. ``The connections will be given from August 15, and most slums will be covered within a week,'' he assured. He further added that owing to shortage of adequate reserves, ration in water supply will be relaxed for buildings constructed after February 26, 1996. Accordingly, supply will be doubled from the existing of 45 litres per head daily, to 90 litres from August 15, 1997. The commissioner also announced the regularisation of unauthorised lofts and mezzanine floors constructed on residential premises up to August 15.
