Blood donor lauded for 100th donation
EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
NEW DELHI, April 19: They call him a "bloody" man. But Kulbhushan Arora, general secretary of the Voluntary Blood Donors' Association, takes the rather unusual title in his stride with a satisfied grin, having earned it for donating blood a 100 times. Arora was honoured at a public function today for this rare achievement. The feat assumes significance in the light of a serious blood crisis in the Capital, when even close relatives are reluctant to donate blood to save near and dear ones.Speaking on the occasion, Dr J G Jolly, who is called the father of voluntary blood donation movement in India, lamented that of the 1,000 capable blood donors in the country, only three to four were actually donating blood, whereas the figure was at least 50 in the European countries. ``If the people like Arora could inspire just 10 persons out of 1,000 to donate blood regularly, the entire country's blood problem can be solved,'' he said. Dr Prem Aggarwal, honorary general secretary of the Indian Medical Association (IMA), in his keynote address, suggested that a directory of the potential donors having rare blood groups be maintained, so that they could be called for help in the hour of crisis. Much of the shortage, he said, was seen in case of rare (negative) blood groups.``If donors with these groups are called to register themselves with their VBDA or their nearest blood bank, their blood donation during the hours of crisis could save precious lives,'' he said.
