Deepti in line for treble

PUNE, July 10: Unseeded Deepti Paranjpe of Sangli created a major upset by shocking third-seed Mansi Bhave of Pune 11-6, 10-12, 11-6 and made it to the last four of the sub-junior girls singles in the Sushant Chipalkatti Memorial Maharashtra Junior State Selection Badminton Championship being played at the WIE Complex.

She will now now take on second-seed Gauri Narayan of Mumbai Suburban in the semi-finals.

Narayan accounted for unseeded Poonam Walimbe of Pune with a degree of comfort 11-2, 11-3 in the other quarter-final.

Deepti, the 12-year-old daughter of former junior national champion Manik Paranjpe-Kelkar, has thus lined herself for a triple having made the semi-finals of the mini girls singles and doubles as well.

Deepti, who has been the top-seed in the mini girls event, demolished Mansi Marathe of Thane in straight games 11-2, 11-0 and has set up a semi-final clash against fourth-seeded Meghna Pawaskar of Pune. Meghna put it across Aditi Mutatkar of Pune in a keen fare 11-9, 1-11,11-1.

Later, Deepti, pairing with Riddhi Panjwani of Mumbai Suburban made short work of Shilpa Ghosh and Amita Dahinge of Pune 15-0, 15-6.

In the other upset of the day in the mini girls section, unseeded Shilpi Kankane of Pune sent the second seed Sayali Gokhale of Pune packing with 11-2, 11-6 margin. She will be meeting Riddhi in the other semi-final. Riddhi has beaten Gayatri Kochchar of Pune in straight games 11-2, 11-0.
