Titanic sinks at Port Elizabeth

TONY GREIG

FIVE days after being completely humiliated by India, minnows Kenya have shocked the cricket world with their 70 runs win in the triangular match in Port Elizabeth yesterday. Joseph Angara, a young student, playing in his 8th ODI was the unlikely hero for Kenya. Dismissing three top Indian batsmen for only 30 runs. His dismissal of the wonderfully gifted Sachin Tendulkar is one he will remember for a long time. Kenya over came the suspension of the captain Maurice Odumbe and the heart attack suffered by their manager. They should be delighted with this win - only the third time they have beaten a Test side in an ODI. ‘‘We are over the moon, this was dream come true for everybody in the Kenyan team,’’ said an emotional Kenyan stand-in captain Steve Tikolo. ‘‘We did it for our manager and for Maurice.’’

The Indian captain Saurav Ganguly was philosophical when he reflected on this stunning loss to the minnows of world cricket. He said, ‘‘We played poor cricket. All credit to Kenya, they played better than us in all aspects.’’ I felt Kenya laid the foundation with a solid 246/6 after wining the toss and batting on a good pitch. India who rested three leading players crashed to 103/7 before being bowled out for 176. This is certainly a feather in their cap - that is for sure.
