Naga
unity talks begin in Bangkok
BANGKOK, JANUARY 7:
More than 50 members of the Naga community began a five-day
meeting today in Bangkok, seeking unity ahead of possible
peace talks with the Government aimed at ending a 54-year-old
secessionist struggle.
The meeting brings together
members of civic organisations from Nagaland and leaders of
the National Socialist Council of Nagaland (NSCN-IM). The
NSCN-IM is seeking a common understanding through the Bangkok
meeting among all Naga groups ahead of any talks with the
Government, its spokesman said. Reconciliation among the different
Naga tribes and rebel factions is necessary for the next round
of talks, said the spokesman, who insisted on anonymity. He
declined to give details about this week’s meeting or who
was attending it. The NSCN-IM, headed by chairman Isak Chishi
Swu and general secretary Th. Muivah, has been holding peace
negotiations with the Government since August 1997.
Last week, Naga community
leaders said leaders from Naga Hoho, the group’s top tribal
council, and representatives of religious, student, human
rights and women’ groups, would go to Bangkok. (Agencies)
