The residents alleged that Anti-Terror Squad (ATS) or Special Cell personnel in plainclothes had gone to the area in unmarked cars and picked up Kazmi’s nephew Hassan Ahmed, a Class XI student, for questioning, police said.
“The locals had some misinformation about the team of officers who went to Shaheen Bagh. The team was not from the ATS or Special Cell, but from the Anti Auto Theft Squad of Southeast district. They were there to arrest a thief following a tip-off,” an officer said.
The team had traced a doctor’s stolen mobile phone and had gone to detain the accused, he said.
“The team arrested a youth named Javed in the afternoon. Javed later told the team that two of his friends, Hassan and Riyaz, were also involved in the theft. When the officers caught hold of Hassan, he started shouting for help. Soon after, locals surrounded the police team and assaulted three men from the team,” the police officer said.
But Kazmi’s son, Shauzab, insisted that the team went to Shaheen Bagh with the intention of detaining Hassan Ahmed.
