Rhythm divine
Pune is getting ready for a “big bang” as India's only drum festival Dumru is set for its second edition. This time more than 50 Indian and international artistes like Vidwan Vikku Vinayakram (The Ghatam or The Pot), Guru Karaikudi Mani (Mridangam), Pandit Bickram Ghosh (Tabla), Talvin Singh (Drum and Bass), Ustad Fazal Qureshi, Sivamani, Greg Ellis (Drum) from the US, Pete Lockett from the UK and Bondo Fernandes from Goa, among others will perform at the festival. Also, 16 folk artistes who had performed at the Jodhpur RIFF, 10 tribal drummers from Goa and five body drummers from Kolkata will be bringing varied combinations of beats this year. As a part of a new outreach initiative, Dumru will be planting one tree for each ticket sold, and will also be offering scholarships in Indian classical rhythm, western rhythm and general rhythm training to five upcoming artistes for one year. The Dumru festival will take place from November 23-25 at the ILS Law College Ground.
