The two rival groups — one led by party MLA from Ketugram Shahnaz Hossain and the other by Labhpur MLA Monirul Islam — were trying to gain control of the Indus area ahead of the panchayat elections that led to the clash around 2 am on Sunday.
After Chittaranjan Mondal, who belonged to Hossain faction, received bullet injuries, he was taken to to Burdwan Medical College and Hospital where he was declared “dead on arrival”.
Angered by the Mondal’s death, villagers set 100 houses on fire. They hurled stones at police vehicles and blocked the arterial Labhpur-Bolpur-Katwa Road. They were demanding immediate arrest of the accused. There was, however, no report of any injury.
