Led by Congress councillor Prakash Upadhyay, about 200 Congress workers demonstrated at the entrance of the KMC headquarters. The situation turned violent after they tried to force their way into the office.
Congress supporters alleged that policemen lathicharged them without any provocation. One Congress supporter, Habibul Rahaman, was injured in the lathicharge, they alleged. Denying report of lathicharge, police said the mob was prevented from entering the office.
Upadhyay said: “I have documents which will reveal that funds amounting to crore of rupees have been misappropriated by a ruling party councillor. I was singled out and beaten up by the police. One of our party workers has been so badly injured that he has been admitted to Kolkata Medical College.”
Mayor Sovon Chatterjee dismissed the allegation and said the Congress has no right to demand CBI probe as its own party leaders are involved in various scams. A probe into the trident lamp purchase is on and therefore there is no need for a CBI probe, Chatterjee said.
