Diskhit said the Transport department needs to work out a regulatory policy. At present, e-rickshaws are not covered under the Motor Vehicle Act.
The Chief Minister said such a policy was the need of the hour given the safety concerns and the fact that their rising number might lead to problems in the future.
According to officials, e-rickshaws have been beneficial in connecting places within a small radius and could provide the best connectivity between Metro stations and the neighbouring residential areas.
Dikshit asked the Transport department to examine all the issues and come out with a feasible regulatory framework at the earliest.
Transport minister Ramakant Goswami also held a meeting to discuss the issue. Present at the meeting were Transport Commissioner Rajendra Kumar, Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Satyendra Garg and senior officials from NDMC and the three corporations.
“I instructed the Transport department to take up the issue on priority. The fast-increasing number of e-rickshaws might become a traffic hazard and result in accidents. I have also asked them to look into the technical stability of these rickshaws,” Goswami said.
