Budget Bites

The Hotel Shivalikview opened recently after having been under renovation for many months. A small coffee-shop kind of space did exist in the previous avatar but it was just a few tables housed within the Indian restaurant Bazm. It seems that some thought (and guest feedback, perhaps) went into planning the new eatery, now called Le Cafe. For one, it looks like a coffee shop and has a menu to please all.

What could be a better way to introduce diners to the new place than a food festival that offers winning (read popular) combos of favourite fare? So, in comes the Kathi Rolls and Pizza festival. Making good use of their wood-fired oven in front of the cafe, the festival dishes out two vegetarian pizzas and a chicken version. As part of the promotion, one can eat unlimited portions from the given choices for Rs 150 (vegetarian) and Rs 175 (non-vegetarian). The meal also includes a fizzy cola.

The Kathi Rolls combo offers three types of kathis that are served with salad and a hot cup of coffee and dessert (gulab jamun). With the weather suitably chilly and the pizza hearth all fired up, we settle for the pizza combo. The order arrives quickly and we notice that these are thin-crust pizzas, thankfully, with very generous toppings. Our Pizza Ortolano comes with a mix of vegetables — broccolli, peppers, mushrooms — and is flavoursome and, though a tad spicy, it works for us. The size is that of a medium pizza and should satisfy two moderately hungry diners.

Though satisfied with our choice, we decide to try the kathi rolls as well. The non-vegetarian option brings in two portions of chicken kathi roll and a vegetarian pindi-channa roll. The latter is lip-smacking and the portions are heavy, so be wise when you order. The kachumber salad, on the side, was tangy and nice. The Gulab Jamun completes the meal. Given the casual ambience of Le Cafe, the festival works well. If you are, however, looking to explore the menu further, there is quite a line-up to choose from. It’s one of those places where you can tuck into an aloo parantha in the middle of the night.

The festival is on till November 4.
