Lucknow : A day after a BTech student of Etawah-based B R Ambedkar College of Agriculture Engineering and Technology reportedly committed suicide inside his hostel room, the police on Sunday arrested four students — staying at the same hostel — on charges of abetment to suicide.

The Etawah Police have lodged an FIR at Civil Lines police station against the accused students under IPC 306 (abetment to suicide) on the complaint of Indra Prakash Singh, father of the 21-year-old victim, Manu Singh.

The body of second-year student Manu, who was pursuing his BTech in Electronics and Communication, was found hanging from the ceiling fan of his room in Vishweshwaraiah hostel on Saturday morning.

The police arrested Amit Kumar, a resident of Bareilly, Gaurav Chaudhary, of Mathura, Dipankar Sharma, of Moradabad, and Suyash Tiwari, a resident of Nawabganj. All four were named in the complaint by Singh, who is principal in a Hardoi-based private school.

Singh alleged that the four accused had “harassed” his son and beaten him up on Friday night after levelling false allegation that he had stolen a memory card from Amit’s mobile phone.

Civil Lines Station Officer Shailendra Singh said the police recovered Manu’s suicide note from Amit who had stolen it from Manu’s room. In his suicide note, Manu had written that he was harassed by the students on Friday night with the false allegation of stealing a memory card, Singh said.
