“To set an example, the compensation for damaging the clinic should be recovered from the Shiv Sena, as senior Shiv Sena MP Sanjay Raut had defended the unlawful and illegal actions,” a Citizens for Justice memorandum to the CM stated.
The clinic was attacked after Dr Dhada’s niece Shaheen Dhada and her friend Rinu Srinivasan posted comments on Facebook following the death of Bal Thackeray.
The Citizens for Justice also demanded a thorough probe into the attack.
Teesta Setalvad, Anil Dharker, Javed Anand and Raghunandan Maluste submitted the memorandum to Chavan on behalf of the NGO.
The delegation also raised the matter of the arrest of Shaheen and Rinu for the FB posts and stressed the need of training cops to update them with laws.
Dharker, said, “We commended the prompt action of suspending both the Superintendant of Police and the inspector in charge of the police station. We pointed out to the CM various issues regarding the Palghar Facebook row. According to us there was nothing remotely offensive about the Facebook post. The CM assured us that the matter will be looked into. We hope the investigation is thorough and the case proceeds promptly to ensure such incidents are not repeated.”
“The arrest of Shaheen and Rinu late in the evening and keeping them at the police station till late at night displayed an utter lack of sensitivity and violated the law. We have demanded that policemen be trained on general laws, CRPC amendments, IT Act, and gender sensitivity, “ said Setalvad, secretary of Citizens for Justice.
