Officials added that they had summoned the Congress leader in the murder case, but he had not turned up. The leader was named in the case after the parents of the deceased told the police that he attended the marriage ceremonies of one of their relatives. The police are trying to ascertain the reason for his presence at the wedding.
Jyoti, who was pursuing a BEd degree from a college in Chandigarh was found murdered in Sector 21. Her body was recovered from a road with head injuries. Investigations had revealed that the girl had terminated her pregnancy. “The girl had undergone abortion in the fifth week of her pregnancy,”said Virendar Singh, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP), headquarter.
Singh said they had summoned the leader, but he was not “joining the investigations”. “We can’t arrest him as there is no evidence against him. The call records of the deceased’s mobile phone doesn’t have his contact number. The only evidence of his involvement in the murder are the marriage photographs”. Singh added that Jyoti’s cell-phone was not recovered, and the call details of the telephone number was obtained from the service provider.
Panchkula Deputy Commissioner Police Parul Kush Jain said, “We are investigating the case. It is a heinous case and we will ensure that all the suspects are questioned to ensure fair investigation”.
Despite questioning the girls landlords in Chandigarh and a few other, the police have been unable to make a breakthrough in the case even after two weeks.
The landlords said that the girl was punctual to the rented accommodation. However, the disclosure by the parents that Jyoti worked at Surya Agency couldn’t be established. The police said that such an agency did not exist.
