In apparent haste to jump the lights before they turned red, a truck driver hit three cars, two two-wheelers and a cycle, killing a person on the spot on Friday. Four persons were rushed to Government Multi-Specialty Hospital (GMSH), Sector 16.
The truck was going towards the railway station. As it came from the IT park side about 8 pm, there were only five seconds on the timer and the driver hurried up to avoid the red signal at the Railway Station Light Point. “Besides the traffic light, I signalled him to stop but he did not. I had to rush to get out of his way,” said Traffic Police constable Rampal.
After the truck driver lost control of the vehicle, it climbed atop the median, hitting the traffic which was on the opposite side of the road waiting for the green signal. The truck driver claimed he was trying to apply brakes but there was some technical problem due to which he could not.
Industrial Area SHO Inspector Narinder Patial said, “Though the truck driver is claiming that his brakes were not working, the truck will be checked and the driver will be made to go through a medical examination to ascertain if he was drunk.”
The truck first hit two people riding a cycle: Ramjas, a resident of Ramdarbar, and Noor Alam, a resident of Mauli Jagran. Then it went onto the median of the road and hit a motorcyclist who was on the opposite side of the road coming from Daria to Chandigarh and was waiting for the green signal. Behind him were two cars which he hit and then turned the truck back to the left of the road. The two cyclists were rushed to GMSH and were unconscious.
Kulwant Singh Jagga, a Manimajra resident, said, “The truck driver hit a cyclist, went onto the median, hit the motorcyclist, two cars and then turned to the left side of the road and hit my car, two other cars which were not damaged much and drove away and then a two-wheeler which was coming from the slip road. The truck hit a streetlight pole on the median after which it slowed down and came to a halt.”
Tarun, an auto-rickshaw driver, said, “I was on the other side of the road and it all happened in just a split second. I saw it all. The truck hit everything which came in its way.”
The driver of the truck has been identified as Jaspal Singh, a resident of Mohali.
Ajinder Singh, a resident of Sangrur who died on the spot, was riding the motorcycle and was dragged along by the truck.
“There was a turban lying on the road. Remains of his motorcycle were lying all over the road,” said Traffic Police Inspector Malkiat Singh.
