clearly growing in popularity and the star-actor divide has begun to blur
The celebration of good cinema from 2012 gains momentum with the announcement of nominations of the 19th Annual Colors Screen Awards. Last year, moviegoers showed an appetite for different kinds of cinema. While some of the star-studded films have made it across several categories in this year’s Screen Awards nominations, the most talked-about films were the ones driven by concept. These entertainers found acceptance from the masses as well as the critics. Here’s looking at some of the highlights:
Directors’ Comeback
APART from Anurag Kashyap, the Best Director category consists of filmmakers whose previous films didn’t make the cut. Anurag Basu, whose Kites failed to soar two years ago, has been nominated for Barfi! in this category. So is Shoojit Sircar, who made a comeback with Vicky Donor seven years after his debut, apart from Sujoy Ghosh, who created magic with Kahaani after failing to cast a spell with Aladin.
Focus on Performance
WHILE a majority of the nominations in the Best Actor (Male and Female) categories include stars, two very interesting names have cropped up in the list. The jury has zeroed in on Deepika Padukone for her performance in Cocktail, Kareena Kapoor for Heroine, Parineeti Chopra who made a mark with her second outing Ishaqzaade, Priyanka Chopra for Barfi!, Sridevi for her remarkable comeback in English Vinglish and Vidya Balan for holding her own in Kahaani. The Khan trio — Aamir (Talaash), Shah Rukh (Jab Tak Hai Jaan) and Salman (Dabangg 2) — makes its presence felt on the Best Actor Male list. Hrithik Roshan and Ranbir Kapoor are there too for Agneepath and Barfi! respectively. Along with this star brigade, Irrfan and Manoj Bajpayee have also gained an equal footing in this category. While Irrfan has bagged a nomination for his formidable performance in Paan Singh Tomar, Bajpayee shone as Sardar Khan in Gangs Of Wasseypur I.
Role Call
TODAY, comic and negative roles have some popular stars as well as character actors. This is evident from Jury nominations for Best Actor in a Comic Role (Male/Female) and Best Actor in a Negative Role (Male/Female) categories. Abhishek Bachchan, who had the audience in splits with his act of a kathak dance teacher in Bol Bachchan, bags a nomination for Best Actor in a Comic Role category. Rishi Kapoor has been nominated in two categories — for his supporting act in Student Of The Year and as Best Actor in a Negative Role category for Agneepath. Sharing the space with him in the latter category are Sanjay Dutt for Agneepath and Mithun Chakraborty for OMG: Oh My God!. Interestingly, filmmaker Tigmanshu Dhulia, who made his on-screen debut with Gangs Of Wasseypur, also finds a nomination in this category.
Spot them Young
THIS year, the category of Best Child Artiste sees three nominations, unlike five in 2012. Nevertheless, it is an interesting mix of actors. Mohammad Samad, who played the lead role in Gattu has bagged a nomination along with Ritwik Sahore for Ferrari Ki Sawaari. Nila Madhab Panda, who found Harsh Mayar for I Am Kalam last year, has tapped another talent this year — Laher Khan, who made a mark with her performance in Jalpari: The Desert Mermaid.
Newcomer Central
A NUMBER of debutant filmmakers showcased their talent through unconventional subjects. The Most Promising Debut Director category sees the following nominees: Shakun Batra, who directed a love story with “just friends” climax in Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu; Gauri Shinde who helmed a woman-centric film with Sridevi in the lead; Sameer Sharma for directing a “food film” Luv Shuv Tey Chicken Khurana and Karan Malhotra for doing justice to the remake of the iconic Agneepath. Producer-actor Arbaaz Khan bagged a nomination too for directing Dabangg 2.
Last year, several regional actors made their mark in Bollywood. Telugu actress Ileana D’Cruz, south star Yami Gautam and Bengali actor Parambrata Chatterjee have earned nomination in the Most Promising Newcomer categories for Barfi!, Vicky Donor and Kahaani respectively. Rubbing shoulders with them is a bunch of young newcomers including Alia Bhatt, Sidharth Malhotra, Varun Dhawan, Arjun Kapoor, Diana Penty, Anjali Patil, Kayoze Irani and Huma Qureshi.
Some of the nominees in this category such as Ayushmann Khurrana have bagged multiple nominations. Khurrana is also in the race for the Best Lyricist and Best
Playback Singer trophies. That apart, D’Cruz is nominated in the Best Actor in a Supporting Role (Female) category while Chatterjee is nominated for Best Actor in a Supporting Role (Male) category.
Musical Medley
Just as a wide variety of films
were accepted, the audience also acknowledged different varieties of music. A look at the Best Music nominees reiterates the acceptance of different genres of music among the Screen Award’s jury members. Among them is the soundtrack of Cocktail, retro style music of Dabangg 2 and Barfi!, hip urban folk of Gangs Of Wasseypur, a dubstep
application in Ishaqzaade, peppy dance numbers in Student Of The Year and Indo-western fusion in Talaash.
Crooning Glory
Among the singing hopefuls, there is a broad mix of new crop of singers and well-versed vocalists. The multi-faceted Ayushmann Khurrana finds a nomination for Paani da rang alongside Nikhil Paul George for Main kya karoon (Barfi!), Neeti Mohan for the dynamic Jiya re (Jab Tak Hai Jaan), Nandini Shrikar for Dil mera muft (Agent Vinod) and Shalmali Kholgade for Pareshaan (Ishaqzaade).
They face strong competition from notable singers such as Javed Ali who is nominated for Ishaqzaade title track, Mika (Pungi, Agent Vinod), Mohit Chauhan for Ala Barfi from Barfi! and Shreya Ghoshal who sang the dance number Radha from Student Of The Year. Interestingly, Sufi artiste Kavita Seth, who has previously sung soft numbers such as Iktaara tried a fast-paced, high note song in Cocktail. She, too, has bagged a nomination.
Music and Lyrics
Iconic lyricists such as Javed Akhtar and Gulzar have each bagged a nomination for their work on Muskanein jhoothi hain from Talaash and the romantic Saans from Jab Tak Hai Jaan respectively. Other names in songwriting include filmmaker Dibakar Banerjee for his “sloganeering” song Bharat mata ki jai in Shanghai apart from first time lyricist Ayushmann Khurrana who shares credits with Rochak Kohli for Paani da in Vicky Donor.
