“The infant is fine. We have conducted medical examination and she will continue to remain in the paediatric ward for a few days,” said Dr Shashikant Wadekar, medical superintendent at Cooper Hospital.
The infant was crying, but the chawl residents chose to ignore her. Cops said that an auto driver who was returning home noticed the baby and brought her home. “The auto driver called the control room, following which the police rushed to the spot and admitted the infant to the nearby hospital,” said Pradeep Gosavi, senior police inspector, Andheri east police station.
Police have registered a case of Section 317 (intentionally abandoning the child under twelve years) of the IPC against the unknown parents. They are also scanning maternity homes in the vicinity to trace her parents. “We are also questioning the nursing clinics and maternity homes in this area to check the ladies who were pregnant and delivered female children in the last week. We are visiting addresses of these new mothers to ascertain who had abandoned the baby,” a cop added.
