The premier investigating agency had on September 6, 2012, laid a trap and had allegedly caught red-handed, UT police SI Naveen Sharma accepting a bribe, from a Ropar resident, to “sort” a false FIR. The CBI had also arrested an alleged middleman, advocate Som Nath Aneja.
CBI swung into action after Ropar resident, Sukhbir Singh Shergill, sought its intervention when SI Naveen Sharma allegedly demanded Rs 5 lakh to “sort” a false FIR registered against Shergill and his wife on the basis of forged documents, impersonation, cheating and extortion.
After Shergill approached the CBI a trap was laid. The Ropar resident then called the sub-inspector and the middleman Som Nath Aneja to hand over the Rs 5 lakh bribe. While the CBI arrested the middleman on the spot, the SI fled and was caught at Panchkula on the next day.
CBI has stated that the total deal was of Rs 10 lakh. The investigating agency then raided SI Naveen Sharma’s residence in Sector 46 and recovered 41 bottles of foreign brand liquor and Rs 9 lakh. Sharma was granted bail on November 6 after the CBI failed to submit a chargesheet within 60 days. The car, he had used to escape, was also released on November 22 along with other documents.
