The CPM on Tuesday questioned Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s silence over the recent incidents of violence in the state, and demanded immediate arrest of Trinamool Congress leader Arabul Islam for the attack on former minister Abdur Rezzak Mollah.
Speaking to party supporters at a rally in Alipore on Tuesday, Leader of the Opposition in Assembly, Surya Kanta Mishra said: “Why is the state government and Mamata Banerjee not doing anything to stop this kind of violence? Goons of Trinamool under the leadership of Arabul Islam attacked our party supporters going to a rally in Alipore.”
Mishra, who is also a CPM politburo member, apprehended that in the near future, political activists and common people would face similar attacks at the hands of Trinamool Congress. “The people of this state is keeping a watch on everything. They will give a befitting reply to Trinamool,” he said.
“Earlier during her (Banerjee) days in the opposition she used to blame us for each and everything. But after her becoming chief minister, every untoward incident has become a ‘cooked up’ case. Because of Trinamool’s indulgence such activities have increased in the state,” CPM leader Mohammed Selim said.
CPM state secretary and Left Front Chairman Biman Bose said statewide protests would be held on Wednesday. “We will organise statewide protests. We condemn the attack. These kind of incidents remind me of the dark days of seventies. This is a dangerous trend for democracy,” Bose said.
