The project, a brainchild of Commission of Police Rakesh Asthaana, has been implemented in association with textile and diamond traders, software companies, builders and Traffic Education Trust, among others.
Under the project, which is being implemented in three phases, a total of 5,000 CCTV cameras will be installed at 500 locations, including entry and exits points of Surat city, important traffic junctions and other sensitive areas.
In the first phase, 104 CCTV cameras have been installed at a cost of Rs 10.5 crore, police sources said. They added that before implementing the project, the police conducted a survey with the help of a private agency to identify locations and numbers of CCTV cameras required.
Asthaana said the footage of all the cameras will be screened at the Command and Control Centre at Police Bhavan and it will be stored for 30 days. “We completed the first phase within four months. We have made arrangements to use battery in case of power cut and have also installed special gas system that works as extinguisher in case of fire. The project would be helpful in maintaining law and order in the city as well as in controlling the traffic,” said Asthaana.
