A total of 286 BJP workers courted arrest. Seven to eight of them suffered injuries and were discharged after first- aid. One person was detected with a hairline fracture.
The protesters started marching from the BJP office in Sector 33 towards the Congress Bhawan in Sector 35. The UT Administration had imposed Section 144 of the CrPC in a 500-metre radius of the Congress Bhawan. Barricades had been put up near the Sector 34-35 lightpoint, preventing any vehicular or pedestrian movement.
The BJP workers gathered near the barricades and raised slogans. Wearing saffron robes and carrying party flags, the party workers burnt an effigy of Shinde. Thereafter, the protesters made attempts to cross the barricades. The police then resorted to use of water cannons to disperse them. A few fell down on the road due to the pressure of the water.
The BJP workers ran in all directions before re-grouping. The protest continued with party president Sanjay Tandon stating that the police had resorted to the use of force even though they were protesting peacefully. The protesters were critical of the imposition of Section 144 every time that they were to hold a protest. They also criticised the comments made by the Home Minister.
The protesters then moved towards the police station in Sector 34 for courting arrest. They were later let off by the police.
The protest led to traffic snarls around the area. Since due to the barricading, traffic was not allowed to enter into Sector 34 from Sector 35, commuters had to take alternative routes to reach their destinations. This caused traffic snarls on the other roads. The commuters were also caught unawares due to lack of any prior intimation.
