Disha, a voluntary student wing of the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER), will organise an eight-day science awareness programme ‘Spread the Smile’ in six villages around Pune this month.

The initiative aims at spread ing joy of education among village children and providing them exposure to the world of science and technology besides inspiring them to undertake higher education. The programme will be conducted every weekend by student volunteers from the city.

As part of the programme, volunteers will visit six remote villages - Vetale, Kadhade, Kurunji, Hatwe, Wajeghar and Ambevane to conduct education-based activities.

“Several activities, including short projects and field activities, have been planned,” said Poortata Lalvani, activity coordinator, Disha.

Another activity coordinator Nishad Mandlik said, “The activities will be student-centric with a focus on hands-on activities and enquiry-based learning.”

Spread the Smile programme was first organised last year with volunteers visiting four villages around Pune. “Last year, volunteers conducted various activities such as science experiments, field visits and sports activities,” said Kaustubh Deshpande, general coordinator, Disha.

“Students made working models of rain water harvesting system and solid waste management system. This time, we wish to take it a step forward by making live projects that will help villagers in general. I appeal to youth to join us in spreading the smile,” said Deshpande.
