Kolkata : The state government on Friday issued showcause notices to five IPS officers asking them to state their roles during the police firing incident in Nandigram on March 14, 2007 in which 14 people were killed. The officers — Arun Gupta, Ganji Srinivas, Debashis Boral, N Rameshbabu and Satyajit Banerjee — had come under scanner of the CBI, which probed the incident following direction of the Calcutta High Court. The agency had earlier sought approval from the state government to prosecute the officers. Gupta was IG (Western Range) and Srinivas was SP of East Midnapore when the firing took place. Satyajit Banerjee was sent to East Midnapore as part of the police team that unsuccessfully tried to enter Nandigram and fired on people. Boral was sub-divisional police officer of Tamluk during the Nandigram trouble.
