Heavy dust storms accompanied by showers since Monday and continuing till Tuesday morning threw life out of gear.
Since Monday night, electricity failure was reported in various areas like Model Town, Aggar Nagar, Shaheed Karnail Singh Nagar, Gurudev Nagar, Dugri and Sarabha Nagar in old city. The electricity which went off on Monday night was back after almost 15 hours in most of the areas, as per residents.
Tarlok Singh, deputy chief engineer, Punjab State Power Corporation Limited, said, “Due to bad weather, especially dust storms, cables were damaged in various areas and insulation was affected. But now the situation is almost back to normal and electricity supply has been restored.”
“Power cuts of 15 minutes frequently in the day for load shedding were also a reason for power problem,” he added.
Dr K K Gill, assistant agro-meteorologist, Punjab Agricultural University, said, “Dust storms were recorded at 18 km/hour on Monday and Tuesday. But weather will start clearing up after Wednesday noon and bright sun will be out. However, light showers can also make a comeback but dust storms will not return. They were due to a western disturbance only.”
Ludhiana district recorded rainfall of 26 mm in the past two days, she said. On Tuesday, minimum temperature was 13.6 degrees Celsius and maximum was 17.4 degrees Celsius.
“Winters are almost over and heavy winds in two days have removed the possibility of foggy days ahead. February 7 onwards clear bright days are expected with abundant sunshine. Light woollens will be needed. Maximum temperatures will rise and minimum temperatures will fall,” she said.
