Kolkata : The public prosecutor of Suri court, Ranjit Ganguly, is in dock for allegedly sending lewd text messages to Additional Superintendent of Police of Birbhum district Debosmita Das.

Ganguly, who was one of the lawyer who fought for the Trinamool Congress in Suchpur killing case in 2001 in which 44 CPM supporters and local leaders were sentenced to life imprisonment for the killing of 11 Trinamool supporters, allegedly sent a text message to the police officer on Thursday.

Das, later, sent a written complaint to her superior, Superintendent of Police (Birbhum) Murllidhar. The matter has now reached Director General of Police Naparajit Mukherjee.

“We have received a complaint from the ASP and forwarded it to the DG,” Murlidhar said.

Das, however, refused to speak on the issue.

“I’m sorry, I won’t speak anything on this matter,” she replied when asked about the incident.

Trouble at Essar site again

Villagers of Dhabani, Lagnapara and Kantaberia area under Laudaha block of Burdwan on Sunday stopped the work at the well sites of Essar Energy for about three hours.

The villagers were protesting the private firm’s decision to recruit ex-servicemen for the posts of security guards. The villagers objected to it saying they should be hired for the job. Their demand also included repair of roads in the village damaged by movement of heavy vehicles and better price of the land acquired by the company for the project, said officials of Essar Energy.

“At around 7 in the morning, some villagers gathered at the well site of Laudaha and forcibly stopped work. Later, our officials went there and the matter was resolved for the time being. A meeting has been called on Monday at Laudaha police station to discuss the issue,” Debajit Kar, Deputy General Manager (Corporate Affairs) of Essar Energy told The Indian Express.

It may be recalled that work of Essar was stalled at Kaksa in the same district last month when local villagers staged a demonstration with various demands. Later, the state administration intervened. Minister for commerce and industries Partha Chatterjee, whom the company officials met later, assured the company of all cooperation.
