Barren to Bazaar

The road to Kisan Haat, near the Chattarpur metro station, is a tricky one. Once you get there, all you see is a barren brick maze, but hints of an exhibition is in the air. Dastkar banners and sign boards grab your attention. Kisan Haat, which is spread across two acres, was set up eight years ago as a venue for farmers to bring their produce directly to the market. In a joint revenue-sharing partnership with Delhi Tourism, Dastkar has now acquired the area as their permanent venue, on a 15-year lease.

The Dastkar Basant Bazaar begins on February 22, the theme is “lotus”. The fair will bring together over 160 craft groups from over 20 states in India.

“We had our eyes on the Kisan Haat for a while, and we heard of the open tender from Delhi Tourism. It was a happy co-incidence. The location allows people to come in, both, from Gurgaon and Delhi. We want to make it a cultural hub. Art, food, fashion, music and dance are as much a part of the crafts, and we’re hoping to collaborate with upcoming performing artists, musicians and theatre groups.”
