In an instance of absolute lawlessness, a group of Trinamool Congress goons today allegedly attacked the BSNL exchange at Shibpur in Howrah.
The workers of the exchange, who had participated in the trade strike, were reportedly beaten up by the TMC men.
The mob which gathered in front of the BSNL office after the office opened today, ransacked the office and damage several equipment.
Sanjib Mondal, a BSNL worker, said: “We were instructed by the BSNL employees’ union to participate in the strike. But we never knew that we would be attacked by TMC workers in this way. Two of our colleagues are critically injured. The Trinamool men ransacked our office and beat up the workers.”
Ajey Ranade, Commissioner of Police, Howrah commissionerate, said: “No formal complaint has been lodged yet in this regard.”
In a separate incident in north Bengal, Trinamool men allegedly attacked a person and his family members, barging into his residence, for participating in the strike.
The incident took place at Dhoopguri in Jalpaiguri district. Udai Mohanta, a shopowner at Dhoopguri participated in the strike and kept his shop closed. Mohanta, a CPM supporter, was critically injured and admitted in the hospital. His wife was also assaulted, said local sources.
Amit Javalgi, Superintendent of Police, Jalpaiguri, said: “This is the result of some problem between two neighbours. However, we have registered a complaint and we are investigating into the matter.”
In another incident in South-24 Parganas, a brick kiln worker, Gopal Majhi, was seriously injured and his eye severely damaged after he was attacked allegedly by Trinamool Congress supporters for participating in the strike. He had also joined a CPM rally. The incident took place late on Friday night. Majhi is undergoing treatment.
The police have today arrested two persons in this regard.
