The three police personnel — Assistant Sub-Inspector Amrut Lakhani, and constables Bhimla Motibhai and Memon — were part of an escort team that was supposed to take Vora to the Sabarmati Central Jail in Ahmedabad from the Navsari sub-jail. Instead, they took him to his house in the Juhapura area of the city and consumed liquor, police said.
Following a tip-off, a team led by Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone I) V Chandrashekhar raided the house and arrested one of the policemen while the rest fled in Vora’s car. The team chased down the trio and caught them near Bharuch.
Vora, a former aide of gangster Abdul Wahab, was arrested and booked under Prevention of Anti-Social Activities (PASA) Act last month.
Chandrashekhar said, “Vora was being brought to Ahmedabad to produce him before the PASA Advisory Board. He was supposed to be taken to the Ahmedabad central jail before producing him before the board. But he was taken to his house where the escort party and he were partying and consuming liquor.”
The DCP said Vora and others absconded in the same private car that he used to commute to Ahmedabad from Navsari with the escort team. “We have asked the Navsari jail authorities to find out the reasons as to why the escort party did not use a police vehicle, and if it was not available, why a Gujarat State Transport Bus was not used,” said Chandrashekhar.
Police said Vora would be sent back to the Navsari sub-jail after investigation in this case gets over.
